Blue zone

Longevity and wellbeing come from nutrition based on healthy and simple food.

Blue Zone is the expression used to identify a specific demographic and geographic part of the world where people tend to live longer than average. Among the inhabitants of these areas there are many centenarians, who are less likely to suffer from the illnesses that cause death in the rest of the world, and live a longer and healthier life.

The 5 areas identified in the studies by Dr. Gianni Pes and Professor Michel Poulain are: Sardinia (Italy), Okinawa (Japan), Loma Linda (California), Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica), Icaria (Greece). In Sardinia the studies talk specifically of villages in the mountains of Ogliastra, Barbagia di Seulo and Barbagia di Ollolai.

Ogliastra is the area with the highest percentage of male centenarians, especially the villages of Villagrande Strisaili, Arzana, Talana, Baunei, Urzulei, Ulassai and Perdasdefogu.

According to the studies the reasons for this wellbeing are nutrition based on healthy and simple ingredients, regular physical exercise, a social structure where the family is at the centre of society.
